Planned obsolescence, the practice where businesses intentionally make products not meant to last so we'll buy again, is an enormous source of waste. Though we most often associate it with technology, the fashion industry is also guilty as charged. What does it require to be fashionable? The constant updating of your wardrobe. Fashion is just another form of planned obsolescence. This series explores the possibilities that might exist if we made longer-term commitments to the things we buy and use across the board: multi-layer plastic food bags become luxury garments, single-use eyedroppers and dental floss become elegant accessories, old technology (telephone and stereo wires) get a second chance at relevance.
